The neighbourhood was rebuilt with smaller-scale residence buildings on the premise of its original format. In the second half of the seventeenth century, Amsterdam experienced an inflow of Ashkenazim, Jews from Central and Eastern Europe. The first Ashkenazis who arrived in Amsterdam were refugees from the Khmelnytsky Uprising in Ukraine and the Thirty Years’ War, which devastated a lot of Central Europe. They not solely based their own synagogues, but had a powerful affect on the ‘Amsterdam dialect’ including a large Yiddish native vocabulary.
