Watch: Mrs Sri Lanka’ beauty queen injured in on-stage bust-up

The winner of the “Mrs Sri Lanka” beauty pageant ended up in hospital with head wounds after her crown was snatched away in an on-stage bust-up.

The ugly scenes unfolded moments after beauty queen Pushpika De Silva won the “Mrs Sri Lanka” title at Colombo theatre on Sunday night and she was briefly crowned by prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s wife Shiranthi Rajapaksa.

Mrs World Caroline Jurie, who was at the ceremony, suddenly appeared on stage and announced Ms De Silva stands disqualified and cannot hold the title because she is divorced.

“I am taking my first steps saying that the crown goes to the first runner up,” Ms Jurie said. “There is a rule that prevents women who have already been married and are divorced.”

Kataluna Enriquez has made history by becoming the first out transgender woman ever to win the Miss Silver State USA beauty pageant, the state’s largest preliminary competition. Because she won, she will go on to compete in the Miss Nevada USA pageant. If she wins that, she’ll compete for Miss USA, and if she wins that, she’ll go on to compete for Miss Universe.

The 27-year-old champion previously competed in a 2016 transgender pageant, but she began competing in cisgender pageants last year. She is now using her platform partly to discuss the challenges she has faced as a trans person and pageant competitor.

Sheree Koester signed up for tap dance lessons at the Huffhines Recreation Center in Richardson three years ago, hoping to have fun, increase her fitness level and meet new friends.

She did all of these things, and also went on to compete in and win her first-ever beauty pageant — in her 50s. Koester became the winner of 2021′s MS Senior World 50s pageant in January.

Part of Koester’s platform was talking about what she gained through the dance classes at Huffhines. The program helped her gain more poise and self-confidence, Koester said in a video report.

“It’s just a wonderful program. It benefits not only physical aspects, but mental aspects because we have to learn so much and remember things and it helps develop my core and my overall self-esteem,” she said.

Many others in the program look up to her, especially the younger students, Huffhines Dance Instructor

Arielle Keil is a 26-year-old creative advertising student and who was crowned Miss Intercontinental New Zealand 2020 in early November.

Keil, who is of Filipina-German heritage, is the first transgender woman and first Filipina to represent the country in the beauty pageant. She was born in Davao City in the Philippines and spent most of her life in Auckland. But her journey has not always been easy.

When Keil first began transitioning in 2017, her family disowned her and kicked her out.

“I’d already spent the formative years of my life as the wrong gender, I didn’t want to waste my twenties in the wrong body either,” Keil told The Guardian. “This way of thinking really helped me come out to my parents because I knew that whatever their reaction was, this was something I needed to do for myself.”

However, after the difficult rough patch, her relationship
