PORTSMOUTH — Since opening in October of 2021, Avelon Home was designed to be a different type of bricks and mortar boutique store. Avelon owner, Taylor Amaio Fletcher had a vision to create a shopping atmosphere that combined modern, vintage and handmade items curated in an inspiring, cohesive and natural aesthetic.

“Avelon is the culmination of years of cultivating relationships with vendors to create a beautiful and cozy environment for our customers,” said Fletcher. “Many people who step into our store equate it to visiting a beautiful home where everything is for sale, which is exactly the type of shopping experience I was looking to create.”

Vintage and modern items sit side by side within the store. Fletcher enjoys refinishing and reinventing vintage finds. For example, she offers tables built with salvaged wood and industrial legs.

Perhaps the most unique thing about Avelon Home and one that has contributed to its early success is the leveraging of social media to attract local customers to the Portsmouth store and to expand the stores geographic reach nationally. One hundred percent of the store’s marketing activity and budget is spent on Instagram and Facebook advertising, which Fletcher credits for generating most of her customer base.

“I constantly hear from my local customers how they saw my Instagram or Facebook post and it reminded them that they wanted to come in to visit the store,” explained Fletcher. “And social media allows me to reach people all over the country. Recently, I sold a painting to a gentleman in Louisiana via an Instagram post. He sent me a photo of the painting hanging on the wall in his home in Lafayette, which I posted to social media and boosted the post through advertising in his area.”

Fletcher recently expanded her online marketing efforts through the creation of Reels, which are fun and inspiring short videos that can be used by small businesses to attract new audiences and customers. In this Reel, Fletcher shows off her vintage glassware in an amusing manner to the delight of the audience and enticing one to post they were on their way to the store.

“What I learned from the pandemic is that small downtown businesses like Avelon cannot solely rely on their location to bring in foot traffic,” said Fletcher. “Social media allows me to captivate people in their homes or on their phones and get them to visit the store or buy online. It has really underpinned our success and I would recommend that all small businesses utilize the power of social media.”
