Women Who are Transforming the Beauty Industry with Their Organic Products
It is ironic how society expects women to look beautiful and stay fashionable but discourages them when they start a business around the same themes. But this is just one among the many barricades women have bulldozed their way through to make a mark in the industry.
India’s cosmetic industry has been on a high growth curve and is expected to cross $20 billion by 2025. Only three years ago it was valued at $6.5 billion. With more and more women joining the workforce, the spending capacity of the country’s women has also been on the rise. This has enabled and encouraged more young women to buy beauty products, creating a burgeoning market for entrepreneurs to cater to the demand.
Here are five such female entrepreneurs who have disrupted the beauty industry with not just their organic products but also with their exceptional leadership. Let’s celebrate these trailblazing women who are leaving a beauty mark, so to speak, on the industry:
MamaEarth
A plastic positive beauty brand, MamaEarth was founded by Ghazal Alagh and her husband. After failing to find the right baby product for their infant, the couple identified that the market had a dearth of safe, chemical-free products for babies. They founded MamaEarth with the promise of delivering products made using high quality natural ingredients that are safe for both the baby’s and the mother’s skin.
From expectant mothers to infants, MamaEarth is a brand the country trusts. Within a span of four years, the brand has become the first Asian company to receive the MadeSafe certificate and a whopping turnover of over 100 crores.
Enn’s Closet
Devastated by her good friend’s battle with skin cancer, founder Nandita Manchanda was determined to scrounge the market for makeup that was free of chemicals. She found that the market was filled with synthetic and chemical infused fragrances and makeup. It was then that she established her own brand of all-natural and organic makeup through Enn’s Closet. Her products are paraben free, non-toxic, completely safe, and highly effective.
Nandita is a woman who stands her ground, and is a strong advocate of body positivity and embracing age gracefully. She believes that the role of beauty products is only to highlight one’s best features and not to camouflage the rest. She feels that “Change is the only constant in life. Embrace your beauty and be natural. Age Gracefully!”
Ohria Ayurveda
Rajni Ohri expanded the range of organic makeup with her brand, Ohria Ayurveda. Rajni was a nature lover as a young girl, and still believes that nature has the power to heal anything. Her products combine the properties of exquisite herbs sourced directly from the foothills of the Himalayas and are bottled using age-old ayurvedic remedies, making them one-of-a-kind.
She established Ohria Ayurveda in the year 2018, from her personal savings, after completing a course in Aromatherapy from London. The company now stands at an annual turnover of 200 crores and is a trusted name among people with a passion for ayurvedic oils and beauty products.
RAS Luxury Oils
The dynamic mother-daughter duo, Shubhika and Sangeeta Jain, launched RAS Luxury Oils to cater to those with a love for indulging in all-natural beauty oils. The brand produces plant-based, pure, and cruelty-free vegan products that are not only great for the skin but also healthy for the environment. With the correct balance of Ayurveda and science, their products are intended to awaken your senses and provide a truly luxurious, and guilt-free, experience. RAS Luxury Oils has tie-ups with numerous luxury hotels and spas in order to promote sustainable and eco-friendly beauty products.
Ruby’s Organics
Rubeina Karachiwalla’s brand is a game changer in the world of organic makeup and beauty products. Being a makeup enthusiast herself, she tried everything that came her way only to realise how harmful and toxic chemical-based beauty products can be. This inspired her to source organic ingredients and develop an entire range of makeup products from lip balms, lipsticks, and foundation to everything else under the sun. It is a brand made in India, for the Indian skin. Rubeina takes a lot of pride in being the first Indian organic makeup brand and says, “For me, creating an ‘honest brand’ laid the foundation for Ruby’s Organics.
These women have set new industry standards by positioning themselves as leaders in their niche. Each one better than the next, these brands realise their responsibility in creating toxin-free, natural products that can be trusted by the consumer. They have also paved the way for the new generation of women, allowing them to expand their horizons further.
