As a self-professed beauty fan, there are so many products from major brands that have made their way onto my list of must-have makeup and skincare. On the other hand, there are also some amazing indie brands whose innovative and effective products deserve just as much attention as their big-league counterparts.

Trying out new brands and sharing my findings with friends and family has always been one of my favourite ways to spread the word, and in light of the current economic climate, it’s more important than ever to support local talent. Whether you’re on the hunt for makeup, skincare, or bath and body products, there’s something out there for everyone, and it may have even been made in your own backyard.

Just in time for Canada Day, we’re shouting out some of our favourite Canadian beauty brands in case you’re looking to shop local. Ahead we’ve gathered just a few (10 to be exact) of the proudly Canadian indie beauty brands to watch.

For those looking for fragrance-free, 100 per cent natural skincare, Consonant’s line of effortless products have you covered from head to toe. Their simplified skincare kits are a great option if you’re looking to overhaul your beauty routine and aren’t sure where to start, and their targeted formulas are ideal for addressing skincare concerns ranging from ageing and dark spots to redness and acne.

Handcrafted in their state of the art, energy-efficient headquarters nestled in the Haliburton, Ont. forests, Living Libations offers a selection of plant-based skincare where essential oils are the star of the show. All products are gluten, GMO and synthetic-free, as well as food grade, so you can rest assured that what you’re putting on your body is as good as what you would put inside it.

At the heart of Wildcraft is skincare that’s natural, effective, and most importantly, affordable. All of the brand’s products are crafted in small batches in Toronto and designed to be integrated into your daily routine. The best part? All products ring in under $35.

Based in Edmonton, Alta., this brand prides itself on its all-natural skincare and fragrances made using unique ingredients like watermelon, mango, and pink coffee. Powerful blends of essential oils help create a relaxing moment every time you reach for a bottle, and allows your skin to shine.

Sustainable packaging plays a big role in their collection of makeup and brushes, including refillable compacts, biodegradable packaging and recyclable containers wherever possible.

Created by B.C. sisters Tracy Olesen and Karen Sjoberg and now run by Karen’s daughters Tegan and Lindsay, it’s a family affair at Pink House. The women behind the brand are committed to bringing the highest quality ingredients to their products, while still remaining affordably priced.

If you’re looking for a Canadian alternative to Lush, Toronto’s Sudsatorium is one brand that you’ll want to check out. For hypoallergenic, vegan fragrances, look no further than Bailly’s collection of empowering and uplifting scents. With names like Brilliance, Excellence, and Resilience, each scent embodies the strength inside every woman, and as an added bonus, money from every sale benefits the Just Like My Child Foundation’s Girl Power Project.
